TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Valerie Rix

What made you want to teach yoga?
I’ve been doing yoga on and off for nearly 20 years, but really dedicated myself to a regular practice in my late 20’s. After going back to school and working as a massage therapist for several years, I saw first hand how powerful the practice was. I saw my body become stronger while my mind became calmer, allowing me to keep up with a physical schedule, and I wanted to share that. I had a few clients/patients suggest yoga teaching to me, but it took a few years to get over my stage fright and feel ready to commit to school again. Thankfully, I finally dove into what I loved to do and did it!
What is your favorite asana and why?
Generally, I find that the answer to that question will always change, depending on the needs of your mind and body when you get on the mat. Each day can be so different! That being said, Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined bound angle pose) is one I almost always want to do. I find the gradual opening of the hips relaxing, and often feel a soft release in my lumbar spine and sacrum (low back), especially when I add in an overhead arm stretch!
Outside of the world of yoga, what are you really passionate about?
Doing the right thing and living from the heart (or, trying to anyways!). It sounds corny, but I find when I am most true to myself and to others, I am a happier, healthier and nicer person. I am also passionate about things like jewelry making, my pets, good food, music and body work. Oh, and 3rd Rock From the Sun! ;)
Did you always teach yoga or did you have another career?
I have been working as a massage therapist for the past five years. Before that I worked mostly in office settings, primarily in Accounting. It was a huge change, but I am grateful each day for what I do now!
What life lesson have you learned that served you the most?
More often than not, it’s not about you. I took things way too personally for a lot of my life. When I meet a difficult person or situation now, I try to assume that person/people is doing the best that they can in that moment, and respond from a place that honors my highest intention.
Do you have any favorite quotes?
This is my favorite question! …
"If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won't have to hear it scream." -Unknown
“Always be a first rate version of yourself, and not a second rate version of someone else.” –Judy Garland
“Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.” – Alan Watts
“Please watch out for each other and love and forgive everybody. It’s a good life, enjoy it.” –Jim Henson
“Try something new each day. After all, we’re given life to find it out. It doesn’t last forever.” –Harold and Maude
What is your favorite season and why?
This is a tie…. Summer, for all the outdoor activities and sun. Fall, for the scents, colors, crisp air, baking apple goodies and for the welcomed slower pace.
