Teacher Spotlight with Jennifer Hollister, E-RYT

What is your favorite asana (pose) and why?

I don't have one favorite asana as it's been ever changing over the years. As my body and my mind change each continually need something different. I’ve always been a big fan of Savasana though. The moment I settle back into my mat my body and mind connect in stillness. For me I think almost any restorative pose allows for some of this. These poses quiet the mental chatter which can be relentless at times, relaying all sorts of conflicting information, stories, and possible outcomes. When I sink into a restorative pose, my breath becomes easy and my body relaxes so that it doesn’t resist. The nervous system quiets and clarity rises.

Do you have any favorite quotes?

"Honor the space between no longer and not yet" "Be someone you want to be around" "The only person you need to be better than is the person you were yesterday."

What is your favorite season and why?

Fall all the way! I love everything about the transition of this season. Mother Nature points out the need to shed, restore and then start all over - time and time again. Autumn reminds me that my body, mind, and surroundings are always developing. It focuses on the impermanence of life, emphasizing how vital it is to embrace the present. By doing so, I can savor what I have before it's gone. Of course the crisp fall air, changing leaves and breathtaking beauty personify my love for it all!

Outside of the world of yoga, what are you really passionate about?

Music, reading and the outdoors. Whenever I need to reset I simply walk into the forest. I say forest because that's outside my front door. But any nature, it can be water, desert, mountains or valleys. Just place me in nature and my entire being responds positively.

What life lesson have you learned that served you the most? This might seem very primitive to some people but I recall my ah-ha moments after realizing I didn't have to chase happiness. I was simply able to enjoy it when it’s present and release it when it dissolves. It was grasping non-attachment in a healthy way. Understanding that, I was able to allow life to unfold without needing to control it lifted me of futile concerns. Expectations no longer ruled my life and when emotions arose, I had space and perspective.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your classes? I draw inspiration from every part of my life. I'll listen to music and imagine how it could sync up to a beautiful yoga flow. I watch kids play and want to go create a class on inversions and balance. I see the stiffness in people everywhere I look and want to go adjust them. "Here, just lower your shoulders, lift your chin, draw back a bit..." but people don't like that when they're waiting in line for coffee. Mostly I look into myself and recognize I may be in need of some heart opening or breath work and that often times comes out in classes. I share my life experiences through my teachings.
